MIDGRID Guide to Gratings - Safety, Specifications and Accessories

1. The Importance of Spanning Gratings Correctly.

All Gratings are constructed with a Primary Flat Bar that is referred to as the Load Bearing Bar. The direction of travel of the Load Bearing Bar determines the Direction of Span.
It is Critical that all Load Bearing Bars are supported at each end by the Supporting Steelwork (as per the illustration).
Installed correctly, the gratings  can take Pedestrian Loadings easily, with the correct advice from ourselves regarding the depth, thickness,  mesh pattern and centres of supports.
Failure to install the gratings in the correct way can lead to injury or fatality.

2. Fixing Method of Gratings

Gratings can be secured to supporting steelwork by means of our Grating Fixing Clips.  The clips consist of a Saddle Clip, M8x70 Long Bolt, Bottom Plate and a M8 Square Nut.
Whilst the quantity and clipping positions is normally left to the discretion of the installer, we would advise 4 No. Clips per square Metre to be sufficient for most applications. We can supply Universal Clips to fit both 41mm and 30mm centres of Load Bearing Bars, as well as a range to suit nearly every Mesh pattern of Grating.  Other clips are available see ~ grating-clips for further information.

3. Kick Plates and Deep Binding Bars

Kick Plates, also known as Toe Plates project above the top surface of the Gratings. They can be incorporated into Gratings in both Straight and Curved forms. Their purpose is to prevent items from accidentally being kicked over the side of platforms and walkways, as well as to present a border to walking surfaces.
Kick Plates normally come in 100 x 6 mm, 130 x 6 mm, 150 x 6 mm and 180 x 6 mm Profiles.

Deep Binding Bars project below the top surface of the Gratings. They are normally attached in Straight Lengths and are used to raise gratings in areas where rebates may be present or to match up to gratings of different heights.
Deep Binding Bars normally range from 75 mm upto 180 mm in Depth.
